ITT of the hurly burly of the cam paignIf so qtriet a campaign may be said to baVe bad a bur ly barly attaebnientr-tnere was . made manifest the truth of the old saying "Many men of many minds" on the vexed' subject of. the trusts. Every tne appeared to ba?e a remedy which he was anxious for. the country to try. Df. Roosevelt made bis diagno sis and prescribed a remedy "pubHc ity" which has been much discussed and- much derided. "Publicity did not prove a winner. Then Dr. John T. Morgan of Ala? bama, a veteran physician whose bead Is blossoming like the almond tree, pre scribed for the patient Dr. Morgan's remedy is "taxation," a remedy about whose constitutionality there are grave doubts. Dr. . Sereno B. Payne's formula is "Let well enough alone," and Dr. Mar cus A. Hanna, "raising" Dr. Payne at his own game, improved or enlarged the Payne formula into "Keep on let ting well enough alone." Dr. Littlefield thinks a constitutional amendment is the sovereign remedy. and so on to the end of the chapter. When doctors disagree, what then? We are told that in a multitude of counselors there is wisdom, and we are also informed that too -many cooks spoil the broth. Quren sabe? Foraker Eulogizes' Hanna. People will conclude that the day of miracles is not passed wherrthey learn that in a speech at Cincinnati Senator Joseph Benson Foraker pronounced a most glowing eulogy on his arch ene my, Senator Marcus A. Hanna. Most assuredlyMarcu8 ught to set up as a lion tamer if he has conquered Foraker and so thoroughly broken the spirit of the "Fire Alarm Statesman" as to ex tract an encomium from" him.. How have the mighty fallen! Fifteen years ago, before Hanna was heard of "out side his own state, Foraker not only held the center of the stage in Ohio, but constituted the whole show. His word was law with the Buckeye Re publicans, and he ruled them with rod of iron. .. At that time if any one had been called on to predict what Ohio Republican would reach the pres- -idency the chances are 100 to 1 that he would have picked Joseph Benson as the winner, or he was the darling of the young Republicans, the Prince Rupert of every campaign. But Wil liam McKinley grew apace, outstripped the flerv Foraker and secured the greatly coveted plum. Senator Foraker iaad the empQr honor, of placing his great rival in nomination. McKinley is In his grave. "After life's fitful fever he sleeps well," and bis faithful friend. Senator Hanna, who climbed Into prominence solely because he was Me Kinleys sworn friend, apparently stands a better show of capturing the Republican presidential nomination than does Senator Foraker. When the latter, brilliant though he Is and prom inent, thinks of what is and then of what might have been he must ol all men most thoroughly realize what shadows we are and what shadows we pursue. A Good Riddance. All decent and self respecting Ameri cans will be delighted to learn that Wu Ting Fang, for many years Chinese min ister to this country, has been recalled. They will also be glad that the edict recalling him is peremptory. He is di rected to return to China at as early a date as possible, the earlier the better, for; he is the greatest nuisance, bar none, that has Infested and afflicted this "country within the memory of the oldest inhabitant. He has been lion ized and petted by society people be cause he talks pigeon English and wears his shirt outside his pantaloons just as one of the Four Hundred recently gave a swell dinner to' a drunken chimpanzee at a fashionable watering place. J ust why Wu has not been given, his pass norts and. ordered out of the country long ago is a mystery, which, like the peace of God, passeth 'all understand ing. He has violated every rule-ap-DUcablo, to. foreign ministers.. 'Queer. There-is no accounting for popular whims, fancies, fads and iagtea. The same public sentiment which coudemoa and taboos boxing and dancing at athletic sports toteratca-J-not only tol erates, but encourages footban. Per haps there Is not an authentic case pu record where -dancing prodoced a death.-and perhaps no healthy man was ever killed in a prizefight certain ly not in a boa ing bout for points, but fatalisms In- football are not unusual. Just why punching a fellow mortal with a padded glove la a mortal aio and kicking him to death a Justifiable pastime it would be difficult to ex plain on any rule of common sense. We Jay the flattering unction to our souls that we are vastly superior to the Spanish Americana because we prohibit bullfighting, in which they delight but when was bull baiting pro ductive of anything so horrible as the death of young Edward Schmidt at Staunton, III.? The Real-Thing. The tuft hunters and aristocrats of America are all in a feverish flatter because the announcement is positively made that Leopald, king of Belgium, la to attend the. Louisiana exposition at .St. Louis In 1904. Leopold rules over a buffer kingdom about as big aa the average congressional district In Mis souri. He is merely a. royal puppet aet up by bigger potentates for their own convenience and pleasure, and Is per haps the greatest roue among the po tentates of Europe, which la saying a great deal. His outrageous treatment of his daughter shouhl cause tba door of every decent bouse in America to be shut in bis face, but It will not be aa He will be hailed as great personage, and the bonton will tear the clothes off each other in the Insane -deaire to bask in one brief, halcyon, fleeting mo ment in the presence of this royal old rake. O temporal O mores! En Route. When the Boer war closed, it was given out that the British had com pletely won tho hearts of their recent foes by the peace terms granted and that the Boers would settle down -at once into the most exemplary citizens and rejoice In wearing the Chamber lain yoke; but, mirabtle dicta, it is now rumored that sedition la openly preached by certain stiff necked deni zens of those brave little republics and that hatred of Englishmen and of English dominion is part of the. creed of the conquered burghers. So serious has the situation become that Charo berlain is going to South Africa him self to study condition. at short range. Wonder If he ever reflects upon the loss of life and property bis ambition cost the world? Work For the Worker. Mr. Elbert Hublard of East Aurora, N. Y., is a bit of a sage who look a Ilka William Jennings Bryan, wears a bunch of nntrainmeled hair, a blue flannel shirt and a pair of cordnroy trousers. In this makeup there Is noth ing to keep a- healthy brain from doing good work; his daes It na believes In the efficacy of hard wrk. He thinks that alleged curse through which man was condemned to earn his bread In the sweat ofLhla brow to have been a disguised blessing. One clause of hit "credo" declares that "work is for the worker." Mr. Hubbard recently wrote an article for tlia CosmopolHan In which he told a Wt of himself, hi work and something of that reina rk a bla In stitution built up by him. the Royrroft bookshop.
